Make Helium Balloons Last Longer

How do I make my helium balloons last longer? It’s a question we get asked often.

The reason that helium-filled balloons deflate so quickly is that helium molecules are tiny. The helium molecules are so small that they find their way through latex faster than regular air.

All methods to make helium balloons last longer are attempts to slow down the rate at which helium can escape from the balloon. The slower it can get out, the longer your balloon will stay inflated.

In our experience, a foil balloon will last a bit longer than a Latex balloon. This of course depends on the quality of your balloons and where you are storing them.

Prolonging your balloons with Hi-Float

Hi-Float keeps your balloons in the air up to 20x longer. This solution dries inside the balloon, acting as a sealant.

The only downside to the Hi-Float application can be expensive if you are paying to have your balloons inflated – sometimes 50c – $1 per balloon.

Spray Your Balloons With Hairspray – That’s right!

Spraying your balloons with hairspray can extend the life of helium-filled balloons. While hairspray is not as good as Hi-Float, it will provide a sealant on the outside of your balloons.

The hairspray method is done by coating the outside of your balloons. It can be a bit tricky because too little and it won’t work. Too much will cause a sticky mess.

Use a Helium & Air Mix to inflate your balloons

Using a 60% Helium to 40% Regular air mix will make your balloons last longer. Using a 60/40 fill is only recommended for 11inch balloons or larger.

If you are planning on filling your helium balloons using a 60/40 ratio, it’s worth noting that you’ll get even better results combining this with Hi-Float.

Keep your balloons cool.

This is a big one. Helium is a gas that is sensitive to temperature change. If you’re planning to hide the balloons away from the kids, choose your spot carefully.

One great example of a failed storage spot is the bathroom. It may be tempting to hide balloons in your ensuite. If you plan to shower, the temp change and the steam will kill off your balloons.

Another we see often is the garage or the laundry. Which sounds great! but if you have a dryer running, once again – dead balloons!  Storing your balloons in a nice cool area is the best way to keep them in the air for longer.

Tie Balloons Off Properly

It’s easy to get complacent during the rush of organising a party. Make sure your knots are nice and tight. When tying off, secure your ribbon tightly.

When filling foil balloons, a nice tight tie-off around the valve will stop air leaking out and your balloon will last longer.
